Who Built This and Why

An AI concept encyclopedia written by a practitioner, for practitioners.

Why Burstiness & Perplexity Exists

When AI-driven search started rewriting the rules, most of the available education fell into one of two buckets: dense academic papers or shallow hype content. Neither helped the people who actually needed to understand these concepts to do their work.

Burstiness & Perplexity was built to fill that gap. Twenty-five concepts, each with four structured sections: what it means, why it matters for search, how to apply it, and where the frontier is heading. No gating, no paywall. The encyclopedia is free because the knowledge should be free.

Why Connecting ML Concepts to Search Practice Matters

Search is no longer a keyword game. The models that power modern search, from Google's Gemini stack to Perplexity's retrieval pipeline, are built on the same transformer architectures and training paradigms that power ChatGPT. If you're optimizing for search and you don't understand what perplexity measures, what burstiness signals, or how RAG retrieval selects its sources, you're navigating blind.

This encyclopedia exists to give practitioners the conceptual toolkit they need. Not to become ML engineers, but to understand the mechanics well enough to make better strategic decisions.

// the bridge in practice
concept = "perplexity"
theory = "cross-entropy loss over token predictions"
practice = "content that reduces model uncertainty ranks"
bridge(theory, practice) // that's what we do here
